Don’t you consider yourself lucky to have bagged a dream role in Sony TV’s Bade Achhe Laggte Hain when most of your contemporaries are not doing anything?
When
I was not doing anything, it was purely out of choice. This show was
offered when Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki was on air. The thought of Bade
Achhe... was in Ekta Kapoor’s mind since 2006. She wanted to do it only
with me.
Heard that you were also working as a creative consultant during the break…
Yes,
and I recommend behind-the-scene activity to all the actors who feel
that they are the reason behind the success of a show. There is so much
pressure on the creative team.
There were lot of rumours when you were on a break…Yes,
somebody said that I had sold my flat as I didn’t have money, somebody
said I got married and shifted abroad, I am not getting work and that I
was one show wonder. But my family and I know the truth.
How have you grown as a person?I have become more understanding, more mature, and more patient.
So, is it the right time to find the right guy? That
is something I can never plan. I feel birth, death, marriage is
destined, and these things can’t be manipulated. I have surrendered my
life completely. So, whenever it happens, I will accept it. I was a very
lazy person, liked leisurely stuff. When I look back I wonder how I did
it. It is not me at all. I wanted to become an IAS officer and see
where I have landed.
Your show endorses love after arranged marriage. Would you go for an arranged marriage in real life?
I
still feel that one can’t plan it. It is also important to be
independent and happy in your space. There is no guarantee what will
give you happiness any which way. I know many married people who are
unhappy.
Have you been in a relationship?
(Hmmm…thinks hard) Is it important? I don’t want to talk about it.
What changes do you notice in content? Are we breaking away from the stubborn stereotype?
We
are getting closer to reality. In the previous show, my character was
larger than life, inspirational, iconic and someone who could never go
wrong. Earlier, women would say, ‘We want to be like Parvati’, now they
say, ‘We are like Priya’. She is a cool mom. It is a lovely dimension to
a woman.
Some didn’t find the leap in your show very convincing…
I
too used to wonder whether it will work and discussed it with Ekta. She
said, ‘You don’t think like masses’. With every changing track, there
are people who like and there are those who don’t.
Your chemistry with Ram Kapoor is tremendous…
It was unusual to think about our pairing. Now that I have worked with Ram for over a year, there is a comfort level.
Do you tell him to lose weight?
I
tell Ram all the time to eat less and lose some weight, but he doesn’t
listen and says, ‘I am happy the way I am.’ Beyond a point I don’t,
after all, it is his life.
