Karan
Johar, the renowned filmmaker was born in Mumbai. The son of Hiroo
Johar and noted Producer Yash Johar, he has produced several
blockbusters under the banner of Dharma Productions.
He studied at the Greenlawns High School and attended HR College of Commerce and Economics, both in Mumbai. After finishing his French course Karan was all set to get a degree in Mass Communications from Paris. But his good friend Aditya Chopra asked him to assist him in the movie ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’, which made him change his mind and the rest is history.
While working on ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’, during the Switzerland schedule of the film, Shah Rukh suggested Karan to direct his own film. That was how his debut ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ happened. The film won eight Filmfare Awards in 1998 including Best Movie and Best Director trophy. Johar`s second directorial effort was the family drama, ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’, released in 2001. It was also highly successful and won five Filmfare Awards.
After the two movies, Karan took a break from direction but produced and scripted many movie under his banner like ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’and ‘Kaal’. In May 2005, after taking a four-year break from directing, KJo began working on his third film as a director and fourth film as writer - ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’. The movie was the highest grossing overseas film of all time.
In November 2009, KJo ended shooting for his upcoming film ‘My Name Is Khan’ starring Shahrukh Khan and Kajol. The film released to overwhelmingly positive reviews and strong box office figures with a series of premieres in Abu Dhabi and Berlin.
He is currently shooting his Hindi-language remake of ‘Stepmom’, called ‘We Are Family’ in Mumbai and Sydney, Australia. He said in a 5 February interview on BBC Asian Network that he is also busy working on developing a remake of his father`s film ‘Agneepath’ and will be producing ‘Dostana 2’ also.
KJo is also the host of a television chat show called ‘Koffee with Karan’, in which he interviews renowned celebrities from Bollywood and India`s glamour world. The first season of the show began in 2004 and the 2nd season began to air in February 2007.
