Meet the two betiyaan of Indian television- Twinkle Bajpai and Gauri
Nigudkar. While Twinkle plays the character of Lakshmi in Zee TV's Ghar
Ki Lakshmi.
Betiyaan, Gauri will be seen as Krishna, the protagonist in Star
One's forthcoming prime time daily, Betiyaan apni ya Paraya Dhan. Borne
out of controversy (the scripts are penned by the same writer, Rekha
Modi), both the shows address the same issue of discrimination against
the girl child. However, the protagonists of both the shows swear by the
uniqueness of their respective shows.
Says Twinkle, "My show deals with the issue of gender bias in an
unique and most real manner." While Gauri says, "The girl child is yet
to get her dues in major part of India, especially in rural areas. This
show focuses on it."
But the similarities do not end here. Both Twinkle and Gauri are making debut appearances. Twinkle who hails from Lucknow is a trained singer and had participated in Zee TV's talent show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa. "Though I could only reach among the top eight finals, Sa Re... was a turning point of my career," says Twinkle.
While Gauri was doing her masters in Chemistry when she got the offer. She had no aspirations of becoming an actress. "I belong to a family of academician and wanted to pursue a career in teaching. I had modeled for some print commercials just for fun and that lead me to the show."
Lakshmi of Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan is the youngest daughter, who is a fighter and often addressed as Jhansi ki Rani. Says Twinkle, who plays the character, "She is a strong-headed girl who cannot stand any thing wrong happening around her."
However, Gauri's character is subtle and based on the virtues of Lord Krishna. "Wise and rational, she is modest an ardent devotee of Lord Krishna."
While Twinkle asserts that she has found her "dream destination," Gauri confesses that she is enjoying her work but "it is too early to predict anything."
