It feels like nothing is really happening in this drama, even with
all of the rehearsals and red carpets. If Shin Hye Sung (Kang So Ra)
didn’t place herself in compromising and embarrassing situations every
few minutes, I wouldn’t even know this was a Korean drama. But it’s a
good thing that Hye Sung can’t help it.
Hye Sung agreed to duet with Rian (Ji Yeon), and I wish that she had
been more wary and less flattered when her roomie made it seem like she
wanted to partner with her because she knew her the best. Poor,
gullible Hye Sung. But every good K-Drama heroine is that trusting so
that when she gets humiliated later on it’s just that little bit more
sad. So this episode found her working super hard to prepare for the
duet, even though her singing is labored and she gets out of breath so
quickly that even JB (Im Jae Bum) laughs at her. Not cool, JB.
That kind of gross vocal teacher, Ahn Tae Yeon (Choi Yeo
Jin) continues to bully her – could it be because she sees herself in
Hot Mess Hye Sung? For the teacher can’t sing at all either – she
butchered that power ballad from the Secret Garden OST, and it wasn’t just her breathing.
But not everything is doom and gloom for our heroine. In fact, her
very lack of talent led her to win the lottery in the form of a “dance”
with JB (to show how a good dancer can hide the defects of a really bad
dancer) which was rather inappropriate, I think.
But she looked so happy, and for some reason he did too (maybe there’s hope for a Hye Sung-JB romance after all), so whatever.
This pas de deux did not go unnoticed and un-hated by both Rian and
Jin Yu Jin (Jin Woon). Could this mean that Rian also has some feelings
left for JB? I’m guessing that they were happier in their trainee
days, before fame got in the way (it’s always like that in the movies).
So it looks like the love square is forming right on schedule.
Or maybe JB really just likes to dance around people. He also got
his groove on with Yu Jin as they “played basketball” which at the new
Kirin really means one person playing and the other person dancing
around you.
And no, JB didn’t just do this to be weird – he used this to teach Yu
Jin how to dance better. No wonder he’s a professional. I wonder how
Hye Sung feels that Yu Jin is quickly progressing with his dancing –
will she be the only one left behind? Or will she be super shameless
and become a giant Yu Jin fan?
And it looks like Hye Sung and JB had a moment way back when she was
still a little chubby. It seems that the Rubik’s cube he carries around
with him for when he’s stressed was given to him by her. I was kind of
disappointed – I thought he had played with it because he was some kind
of kid genius. Oh well.
She of course knew this because she broke into his dorm room, stole a
kid picture of him, and then hid under a bunk bed when he came in.
While she was melting over the idea that she had given him something to
make him feel better, Yu Jin came in to ask about the dance moves (who’s
the nerd now, Yu Jin?). He quickly spotted a girl under the bed, but
all 3 of them were shocked when Hye Sung was revealed. She hightailed
it out of there, and the two partners just accepted the fact that she
was a stalker. I actually think they took it really well, considering,
and they didn’t judge her for it. They both must like her already.
Hye Sung and Yu Jin had another kinda sweet moment when he gave her
advice on her to increase her lung capacity and she scared him with a
balloon (it was sweet – you had to be there).
Her stomach began to rumble, so he did the nice thing and took her
out for some fried chicken at Principal Ju’s restaurant. And he kind of
paid – he already owed the principal his settlement money, so what was
$20 bucks added to that? That’s kind of a cute hangout for Kirin
students, if the principal decorated better.
But Yu Jin wasn’t just being nice for nothing – he asked to make use
of Hye Sung’s stalker skills by having her record JB practicing so that
he could learn the choreography without having to spend any time with
him. He accepts all her talents. She also asked him what the
relationship between him and the principal was since they seemed so
close. It’s just one of those instances of blatant favoritism, I
guess. But I wonder if they’re going to make Yu Jin secretly wealthy –
the principal mentioned finding his parents, and I had kind of assumed
he was an orphan or something. Besides, what’s a K-Drama without at
least one ridiculously wealthy person?
We also got to see the teachers off-duty at a noraebang where Yang
Jin Man (JYP) finally got to school the Oz folk on dancing. As a credit
to them, they acknowledged his talent which suggests that if Yu Jin
were nicer they’d try to recruit him for their new super idol group.
But they are on average harsh, considering that Han Ji Soo (Kahi) was in
a girl group called Cream Puff.
And we left off with Lee Kang Chul (Kim Jung Tae) telling the
students that he would be dividing them into different classes
(basically the Winners and Losers) based on their duet performances –
where they would be competing against their partners. I get that the
president is trying to show them the reality of the industry, but this
isn’t reality - it’s Dream High. Hye Sung was shocked but
finally realized why Rian had chosen her – she thinks she can easily
beat her. What will Hye Sung do? I’m hoping she’ll beat Rian, but she
already got lucky once this episode. She’ll always have that dance,
right?
